It’s going to be a long semester if today was any indication.
#1: I found out today that I have the happy task of chairing a departmental committee this year. I don’t mind the committee itself but it’s one of the more time- and work- intensive committees we have; as chair, I get even more of the work because of the necessary administrative tasks that accompany the committee work. In the grand scheme of things, it’s fine but I wish I’d had a lower-level return to committee work this year.
#2: A student stopped by my office this afternoon with the query, “Are you busy?” Channelling my inner “Are you kidding me?” turmoil, my response was, “Yes, of course I am; don’t ever ask a professor that question. However, I can take a few minutes if you have a question.” I hope the student took it in the half humorous, half irritated manner in which it was intended.
#3: Obnoxious Student is on a roll. In emails this weekend, OS established that (1) OS is a very busy student and has almost no time in which to meet with professors; (2) a second assignment on the syllabus is quite problematic; and (3) although an alternative assignment is provided if students cannot manage the original assignment, OS wants to know what both entail so that OS can choose between them. Aside from all the issues outlined above, I found out today that OS has complained about the assignment to my Head, conveniently leaving out the fact that I am trying to work with OS to resolve the situation. Luckily, I’ve covered my pedagogical ass with the assignment and my Head has my back, but this did not endear OS to me in the least. We are having a conversation after class tomorrow, whether OS has time or not.
If this is the 2nd week of classes, I’m not sure I’ll survive the 4th.
